Price DECREASES Announced

Today announced a 7% across-the-board decrease in their prices for Styrofoam cups and lids, with just a few minor exceptions.

They attribute this decision to the decline in raw material (oil and resin - I would presume) costs.

Wincup is likely the #2 player in Styrofoam cups (after Dart) and has had some significant internal financial issue in recent years. I candidly do not know if those issues have been resolved or not.

This follows a similar decrease announced by Dart, last Thursday.

As we have stated in the past, in the disposable foodservice industry it is rare to see price decreases announced, but this is a wacky time in our industry so very little surprises me anymore.

We're Back
Sorry for the extended absence..... and one of my New Year resolutions was to blog more regularly.....

Here is our newest DPI graphic. We are seeing really dramatic decreases in pulp and resin prices (plus of course oil), but so far nothing in terms of cost relief from manufacturers. The good news is there are no cost increases on the horizon that we are aware of.

Oil ...... Here we go again
In case you were wondering how this current economic crisis is affecting you and me, here is a prime example….

The “futures” price for a barrel of oil went up $25 (24%) a barrel today. Hopefully this is like last week when the stock market gyrated to violently….down huge one day and up huge the next….

If not, we can expect our gasoline, diesel fuel, raw material and ultimately disposables goods pricing to all head north again…..soon.

Here is a link to a current article about today's news.

DPI for 8/28
Sorry - a bit delayed in getting this posted....

Analysis: The good news is that while most major input costs have stabilized over the past two weeks, the bad news is they did not decline any further. The stabilization of these raw materials costs were slightly offset by the impending announced price increases from International Paper, Solo, Pactiv and a host of smaller manufacturers.

As the increases from these major producers (above) are implemented in early September - and barring a significant change in raw material input costs – we should see a fairly significant decrease in the index next issue.

A good example of how "lag times" affect our costs
Fed Ex (Ground) announced their “fuel surcharge" rate for September and it went UP! The September surcharge is 10.5% versus 10.25% in August. As we all know the price of fuel has been decreasing recently and one would have thought that it would be reflected in Fed Ex’s fuel surcharge…. Not so however.

If you click on the following link (Fed Ex uses the "on highway Diesel price": http://www.eia.doe.gov/pub/oil_gas/petroleum/data_publications/weekly_petroleum_status_report/current/pdf/table17.pdf we can at least see how Fed ex calculates their charge. It also has a nice graph outlining what has been happening in fuel costs for the last year and a half.

As we stated before, we are going to need to wait for all these pent up cost increased to work thir way through then see a sustianed period with stabel (or lower) costs before we will feel much relief.
